A steep canyon climb from Lost Dutchman State Park up Siphon Draw to the Flatiron, the broad rock prow on the Superstitions' western face; the upper part is an unmaintained scramble.

Siphon Draw starts at Lost Dutchman State Park and heads straight at the Superstitions' western face. The first two miles are maintained trail that winds up into Siphon Draw, a smooth, steep draw. After the draw, the route to the Flatiron is a steep, hard-to-follow climb up rock, with hands needed in places. The park says only experienced hikers in good shape should go to the top, to allow at least five hours round trip, and not to try it in hot weather. The $20 park entry is per vehicle. From the top of the draw, a short scramble through hoodoos reaches Peak 5024, and the Superstition Ridgeline runs south along the crest to Peralta Road.

Field notes

  • Owen · Siphon Draw Trail to the Flatiron · May 2024

This is probably my favorite trail in or around the Valley so far. I've done it 3 times now and each time it delivers. It is a challenging hike with some scrambling near the top, but very well worth it. Great views and better adventure. One tip I have heard is to tend to stay left on the way up after the draw as the route is a little easier to follow in some spots. If you want to keep exploring, there is a mural for a family that died in a plane crash located a ways to the left of where the climb ends (Flatiron is to the right). Shade is partial to good once you're in the draw and beyond, if you go in the morning.
